Repair Underexposed Images

Lucis Pro allows you to quickly and easily repair underexposed images. Just move the Enhance Detail slider to the left until the level of detail is what you want. For most images you also have to move the Assign Original Image Color slider to 100% Original in order to remove color shifts.

Lucis Pro pulls out detail throughout the image. Part of the Lucis processing involves contrast stretching. This means that the range of contrasts in an image is stretched so the entire available range is utilized. Therefore an underexposed image will have the exposure corrected. Also Lucis Pro will not over process areas of the image with correct exposure. Areas of the image where there are no differences in the pixel intensities cannot be enhanced. There is no information to enhance in those areas.

If you are taking images with the intention of processing them with Lucis Pro later is it better to have the images slightly underexposed.

Below are four examples. The top left image is the original image. The top right image is the image with the exposure corrected using Lucis Pro only. The bottom right image shows how much detail Lucis can reveal even from these images taken at night.

Examples:

chinatown night
chinatown lucis

Original Image (top left): This image has very bright and very dark areas. This 8-bit image uses the entire 257 contrast range.

Lucis Image (top right): This image was created just using Lucis Pro. Lucis Pro can enhance the dark areas without losing detail in the bright areas. The Enhance detail slider was moved to 91. No other change was needed.

Lucis Image (right): This extremely detailed image was created by moving the Enhance Detail slider to 47.

Lucis Image (top right): This image was created just using Lucis Pro. Lucis Pro can enhance the dark areas without losing detail in the bright areas. The Enhance detail slider was moved to 91. The Assign Original Image Color slider was moved to 100% Original to remove any color shifts.

Lucis Image (right): This extremely detailed image was created by moving the Enhance detail slider to 37 and then using the history brush to remove some of the Lucis processing in the face and hands.

Original Image (top left): This image taken at night has very bright and very dark areas. It utilizes the entire 257 contrast range. I do not know if this image is Marilyn Monroe or a look-alike.

Lucis Image (top right): This image was created just using Lucis Pro. Lucis Pro can enhance the dark areas without losing detail in the bright areas. The Enhance detail slider was moved to 109. I liked the orange color shifts so I left them in.

Lucis Image (right): This extremely detailed image was created by moving the Enhance Detail slider to 55. I liked the orange color shifts so I left them in.

Original Image (top left): This image taken at night has very bright and very dark areas. This 8-bit image uses the entire 257 contrast range.

Lucis Image (top right): This image was created just using Lucis Pro. Lucis Pro can enhance the dark areas without losing detail in the bright areas. The Enhance detail slider was moved to 131. I liked the color shifts so I left them in. The tie is more red, for example.

Lucis Image (right): This extremely detailed image was created by moving the Enhance detail slider to 63. Then skin had an orange cast so I did remove the color shifts by setting the Assign Original Image Color slider to 100% Original.
