We have a 5 minute demo you can download and run which illustrates how Lucis Pro processes images. The demo is 25MB so please be patient if you don't have a a high-speed Internet connection. This demo primarily shows image processing in Single Channel Luminance mode. Multiple Channel Luminance Mode adds much more creative capability.

Although we have not yet added photographic examples, scientific image processing examples can be found at www.imagecontent.com.

The follow description makes more sense if you are familiar with LucisArt, the Adobe® Photoshop® plug-in software. Click here to view a table comparing the fetaures of LucisArt and Lucis Pro.

Image Processing is all relative:

A digital image is comprised of relationships between pixels. Lucis maps out relative contrasts by comparing each pixel to every other pixel along hundreds of radial lines. With the Lucis Big Cursor and Small Cursor sliders, the user is selecting a range of contrast variances that they would like to see more clearly. Moving the Big Cursor Slider to the left allows the smallest contrast variances to be viewed more clearly. Detail emerges throughout the image. Moving the Small Cursor Slider to the right allows the largest contrast variances to be viewed more clearly. Detail is smoothed. This can result in a beautiful watercolor effect where the image's own relative contrasts dictate how the image is smoothed. Using both the sliders allows mid-range contrast variances to be selected. Then the smallest and largest contrast variances are smoothed. Contrast patterns emerge.

Lucis analyzes and operates on the intensity relationships between pixels. Any time the image is processed with Lucis, the relationships between the pixels has been changed. Multiple processing of an image is a quick and easy way to create your own unique special effects.

Single Luminance Channel Mode: Lucis operates on intensity information only. RGB (Red Green Blue) data is converted into HSL (Hue Saturation Luminance). Lucis operates on the Luminance data only. The new L' is recombined with the old HS and then reconverted to RGB. Color shifts will occur. These color shifts can sometimes be welcome. If these effects are unwanted, try increasing the processing and then mix in the original image to preserve colors. Or try using Multiple Luminance Channel Mode.

Lucis Pro allows you to process images with 125 settings to enhance detail, 125 settings to smooth the image, and, since you can do any combination of detail enhancement and image smoothing, over 15,000 versions of Sculpture or mid-range contrast pattern enhancement. LucisArt has 11 setting to increase image detail and 125 setting to smooth image detail. LucisArt does not have the ability to create any combination of detail enhancement and image smoothing. LucisArt does have the Sculpture special effect which has some mid-range contrast pattern enhancement capability. LucisArt cannot operate in Multiple Luminance Channel Mode.

Multple Luminance Channel Mode: Lucis Pro lets you process each RGB channel of an image separately, letting you alter detail and exposure on photographs without incurring color shifts, or while controlling color shifts. You can also create wonderful special effects by having large differences between the processing chosen for the RGB channels. Then detail and colors shift based on the intensity changes in the RGB channels. Lucis Pro lets you see the grayscale information for each channel and the composite results of the processing of each channel.

Eliminate Radial Artifacts: With Lucis Pro you can reduce or eliminate radial artifacts that sometimes occur when you have high levels of smoothing in the LucisArt Winslow watercolor special effect and the Sculpture special effect. Just increase the scanlines under the Option pull-down menu. This will increase the processing time.

Expanded Mix Function: Lucis Pro lets you add or subtract a percentage of any two images that are the same size, with a preview mode to show you what the resulting Mix would look like. So you can combine various Lucis Pro images with the original or each other. You can also combine two different images that are the same size. Lucis processing on mixed images can produce some dramatic results.

No Image Overwrite: Each time an image is processed with Lucis Pro a new image is created. The original image remains untouched.

Batch Processing: Lucis Pro has batch processing so you can process a number of images at different settings.

IMPORTANT: One issue for Photoshop Users is that Lucis Pro cannot process .psd files. So .psd files have to be converted to tiff, jpg, or one of the other image formats Lucis Pro can process.

Lucis Pro Phone/Online Tutorial Available: Lucis Pro is very easy to use. It is also deceptively powerful and flexible. For individual Lucis Pro instruction in English please contact ICT or visit the online store.
